Raccoons and Neighbors

OK, I have to update you all on my drama lately. First of all let me explain my issue with animals, um well basically, I'm not a big fan. Than when it comes to WILD animals I can't hack it. Of course we live in Washington and there are animals ALL over. They just come and go on their merry little way. I don't bother them and they don't bother.

I live in a little area where there are two sets of duplex's, three attendants and the landlord live in this area. It has a big grassy area in the front with swings. Well I had brought a small swimming pool out to the front of our place and filled it with water for the boys to play in while I did some things out front. My neighbor, Maryellen, who is an animal watcher, came out and not in a very nice way said "Now your not going to fill that with water and leave it in front here all summer are you?" That kind of caught me off guard and I quickly said "Oh no I just wanted a place for the boys to play while I washed the car. I will empty it when we are through." She continued with "Because I don't want my little dogs to drowned in that pool."
WHAT????? Don't dogs SWIM???!! Whatever I just shrugged it off and kept going. Well not an hour later she kind of snipped at me again. So now I'm thinking what is wrong? Why is she being so cranky? Of course I can't just ignore when I think someone is upset with me. I have to figure it out right away. Later that night I went and talked to her to see if everything is OK and she proceeded to say yes and how she is worried about her dogs. Anyway here is where it gets good.... So I decided to use this moment to ask her if she was feeding the raccoons?

She told me "OH yes and I won't give that up. I love feeding those guys and nothing has happened in the 9 years I've been doing it"
I politely tell her how scared to death of them I am, but did she care??? No!! Basically she told too bad and get over it. Are you kidding me, but she is worried a dog is going to drowned in 6 inches of water????? I was livid and walked into the house. Well the next Vance, the kids and I were out back playing in the little pool and what should appear out of the bushes, "the friendly" raccoon. It was 3 in the afternoon and he was within 3 feet from us. I freaked out and ran straight for the landlord. I explained the situation and she completely agreed that she shouldn't be feeding the raccoons. She went and asked Maryellen to stop feeding them. Well needless to say now my neighbor does not like me very much and is giving me the cold shoulder. She even stomped over to the other attendant and now he won't even acknowledge us.

So here is my story!!! What is your take on it? Should I have just dealt with it and not said something? or was I in the right and hopefully she will either get over it or retaliate? I hope she doesn't retaliate. :( I don't like when people are upset with me. I really hope she gets over it. Thanks for listening.

Oh my word. What a crazy lady. Does she not realize that raccoons carry things like maybe rabies. They could hurt your kids and maybe even her precious dogs. You live there too you have every right to have the pool up. you pay rent just like she does. Your kids have every right to enjoy a pool . love ya,

Good job saying something. She will get over it. If not, it isn't your problem. Just act like nothing is wrong. Don't let it bother you.

Seriously, I think you did the right thing. if she's not a big enough girl to handle it, then that's her problem. She should get her panties out of the bunch they seem to be in and learn that the world doesn't resolve around you. I agree with the other two posts. You should get to enjoy your place as much as she does and if you just act like it wasn't that big of a deal, then eventually she will ahve to get over it. Buying into it will only give her the satisfaction she wanted from throwing her fit. Sorry! Long comment here. :) Good thing you love me :)

I'm glad to know that I am not the only one with crazy neighbors! If the lady is so worried about her dogs drowning then she needs to watch them. Raccoons are dirty and can carry disease just like any wild animal she is crazy to feed them. You were right to say something. Beware of retaliation though. People like to get even:(
